Privacy, Surveillance & Dataveillance

Description This module response is based on the media article: Hackman, R. (2015). “Is the online surveillance of black teenagers the new stop-and-frisk?” The Guardian: April 23, 2015. http://bit.ly/1PoFNN0 Read the Hackman (2015) article regarding the increasing use of online/social media surveillance by police services in North America. Be mindful of the problematic social issues surrounding this surveillance that are discussed, such as the reliability of algorithms for data collection, ethical use of personal information/data (even if it is public), self-surveillance, barriers to active engagement in participatory culture – and more. What are the societal and ethical implications of social media surveillance? Having read and understood the module five readings and the Hackman (2015) article: -Develop a thesis statement that answers the research question: What are the societal and ethical implications of social media surveillance? -Critically and analytically examine three social issues from Hackman’s (2015) article that are pertinent to this module’s theme of Privacy, Surveillance & Dataveillance that help you develop and support your thesis statement. -Connect the discussion of each social issue to one of the assigned readings for module five (three issues = three separate readings) that helps you support your thesis statement Format This submission should not be persuasive or opinion writing (which is emotion based), but instead should be argumentative writing, in which you are proving a point with evidence (which is logic based). Remember to organize your response with an introduction, body (discussion of three issues/readings), and conclusion. Your submission must include: Introduction An introduction that provides context and description of the issue, and includes is a clear thesis statement that details: what the paper will argue (standpoint), how it will do so (support), and why it is important to examine (significance). Body/Discussion A body that has three points of discussion/analysis that reinforce/support the thesis. The topic sentence of each paragraph must connect to the thesis statement in the introduction. Paragraph 1: discussion of first social issue & support from one module five reading Paragraph 2: discussion of second social issue & support from one module five reading Paragraph 3: discussion of third social issue & support from one module five reading Conclusion A conclusion that clearly recaps the premise of the paper, the thesis/argument and support offered, and provides some bigger picture insight into ‘where do we go from here’ in the discussion of this topic. Important Notes: Your M5R response must include at least three module five readings, one in each discussion paragraph. Hackman (2015) must be cited and referenced properly (that’s four references in total minimum). You can absolutely use include more sources once the minimum has been met. A reminder that resources are provided to you regarding APA citing & referencing, paraphrasing, how to write critically, how to write a paper – in the introduction module. Properly cite and reference any readings that you use in APA format. Submissions that do not cite and reference material properly will not be accepted and will result in a zero. This means, if nothing is cited in your submission and there is no reference list – it will not be accepted. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they are meeting university standards for academic writing, regardless of what your home department is. Do not refer to the assignment, course, or material in the assignment itself – it should be a stand-alone submission that a someone not taking this course could read and understand (For example: “In this module response we have been asked to…” or “As noted in my forum response….” or “Throughout this course we have been examining…” Please name your M5R file properly with course number, last name, and assignment name. For example: COMM2F00FirstLastNameM5R.doc Keep the ‘tone’ academic and more ‘formal’; watch your vocabulary – do not be conversational, do not use contractions. Do not include vocabulary that reflects opinions, beliefs or feelings, this is an analytical submission of an argument derived from evidence (readings/literature/research). Do not provide only descriptive opinions and speculations, make succinct arguments that are supported by research and literature. Do not use first person: I, we, us etc.
